📖 Why This Calculator Exists
Carmen cannot correctly calculate your overall course grade when grade categories involve
extra credit — meaning the maximum possible points in a category exceeds its nominal
contribution toward your total of 1000 points. Carmen does not handle this well, particularly
for quizzes taken through the Carmen app, and as a result the percentage Carmen shows for your
overall grade can be misleading.
This calculator corrects for those issues by using the raw category percentages that Carmen
does report accurately, and applying the proper point weights for each category.
🔢 Microbiology 4000.2 — How the Grade Is Calculated
The Micro 4000.2 grade is based on 1000 total points. Several categories have extra credit
built in. The lowest grade in each quiz category is automatically dropped by Carmen:
Lecture Exams — 600 / 1000 points.
Grades are entered manually by the instructor and may exceed 100%, reflecting extra
credit on individual exams. The Carmen percentage is used directly.
Lecture Quizzes — 150 / 1000 points.
Each quiz is worth 133.36 points in Carmen rather than 100, so a perfect score on
every quiz yields a Carmen category percentage above 100%. Extra credit thus is available
going from quiz to quiz, but your total points toward the 1000-point total from lecture
quizzes are capped at 150. Carmen drops the lowest quiz grade.
Lab Exams — 120 / 1000 points.
Lab exams carry extra credit (Carmen maximum is 106.5 points per exam rather than 100),
so the category percentage can exceed 100%.
Lab Prep Quizzes — 60 / 1000 points.
These quizzes carry 5% extra credit (Carmen maximum is 105 points per quiz rather than
100), so the category percentage can exceed 100%. Carmen drops the lowest quiz grade.
Binomial Quiz — 23.3 / 1000 points.
Scored out of 100%; no extra credit adjustment needed. Carmen drops the lowest quiz grade.
Unknown Determination — 46.7 / 1000 points.
Scored out of 100%; no extra credit adjustment needed.
Voluntary Quizzes (out of class) ⭐ — up to 50 / 1000 points.
This is pure extra credit added on top of your grade in all other categories.
It is calculated separately after the weighted average of the other categories is
determined. Carmen drops the lowest quiz grade.

🔢 History / Pharmacy 3708 — How the Grade Is Calculated
The Hist/Pharm 3708 grade is based on 1000 total points:
Exams — 400 / 1000 points.
Two exams, each worth 200 points. Each exam score is the sum of the lecture material
component (El) and the higher of the two vocabulary components (with or without word bank).
Exam grades may exceed 100%. The Carmen percentage is used directly.
Lecture Quizzes — 200 / 1000 points.
Each quiz is worth 150.03 points in Carmen. A score of 6/9ths of 150.03 (= 100.02 points)
earns a full 100% for that quiz. Extra credit is thus available, but total points from
lecture quizzes are capped at 200. Carmen drops the lowest quiz grade.
Final Research Presentation — 200 / 1000 points.
Scored out of 100%. If this grade has not yet been entered, the other categories are
scaled proportionally so that an interim grade can still be calculated.
Class Participation — 200 / 1000 points.
Average of two participation grades (pre-presentations and during presentations),
each out of 100%.
Voluntary Quizzes (online) ⭐ — up to 50 / 1000 points.
Pure extra credit added on top of your grade in all other categories. Carmen drops the
lowest quiz grade.
📝 The Calculation
For all categories except Voluntary Quizzes, a weighted average is computed using only
the categories that have grades entered. That weighted average is then normalized to account
for however many categories have been graded so far, so the calculator gives a meaningful
interim result even early in the semester. The Voluntary Quiz extra credit is then
added on top of that normalized average.
Letter grades follow the standard OSU scale:
A = 93–100 •
A− = 90–92.9 •
B+ = 87–89.9 •
B = 83–86.9 •
B− = 80–82.9
C+ = 77–79.9 •
C = 73–76.9 •
C− = 70–72.9 •
D+ = 67–69.9 •
D = 60–66.9 •
E = below 60
